Jan. 12th, 2010 07:13 pmThis does not excuse the fact that it's gone missing and I'm tearing the house up for it. Well, not so much 'tearing' as frantically moving stuff out of the way so that it can possibly be found. Hey! At least it means more stuff is being cleaned up... (We have rooms of holding - I want them somewhat tackled by Montana.)
Bright side - Found a partially cut-out caftan of Ryan's and left-over linen. So I can throw together some more stuff without a problem.
Weekend? Good.
Jan. 10th, 2010 06:20 pmWe had some friends over yesterday, which was v. nice. The house is mostly done (as in it's clean - we won't discuss painting or the plans to redo the larger bathroom or whatever) and that is, well, great. Likely there will be something like round 2 with more people and stuff when it's totally done.
We've got the second bedroom and the Arizona room to do - both of which can best be described as voids.
Today was also spiffy. After wandering aimlessly around the house for a few hours, went up to dad's place and then hit Lee Lee. Now, I know that I've mentioned the joy of this place before, but round two further solidified that feeling. It is, well, awesome. Ended up getting a number of staple things (curry pastes and chili sauces, to be exact, and more coconut milk) as well as produce and quail eggs (because I could). And mint chutney. And thin slices of beef which are destined for soup.
It is, in fact, well worth the trip to the northwest side of town.
After that, we hit up Brew Your Own Brew so
This weeks plans involve finding fabric and cutting out stuff for sewing and fully draining and cleaning the pool. It shall be good, I think.

Jan. 4th, 2010 05:35 pmFriday - Went to IKEA. Bought TV stand, tables, and bookshelves. And new glasses and a few other little things. Then met up with Shaun and Megan to goof off for a few hours. Grabbed dinner - Heart Attack Grill (surprisingly tasty, actually. definitely not a regular thing, though), came home.
Saturday - Cleaned living room and kitchen. You can see the floor! And there's a coffee table! And the DVDs and video games are all organized (with a minimum of argument over organizational practice). Only a matter of time before we've got a workable list that anyone can browse.
This is where I need to make note of how awesome Dom is. He's pretty much put everything together. (I should also note I have, well, no talent for such.) I just catalog and pick up the little things. Granted, I need to properly tackle the rest of the kitchen - meaning organize shit in a vaguely sane manner to prevent the "I have cumin. Where's the cumin? I know I have cumin. Bugger, I'll just buy more." moments...
Then dad came over for dinner. More No Reservations (how I love Bourdain), followed by some Woody Allen, and accompanied by clam cakes and shortbread made for an enjoyable night.
Sunday - Cleaned bedroom, some of the dining room, and Dom put together my new cutting table. Oh! And we saw Sherlock Holmes, which was quite fun.
This week will see more cleaning. Lots more cleaning. And a tackling of the Estrella prep stuff. I don't really have much in terms of Resolutions or anything. Just want to take better care of myself and be more creative.

Haven't stumped it yet. I will prevail!

Dec. 28th, 2009 10:30 amHolidays were, in short, pretty damned nice.
And quiet. This is very important.
We had my dad over on Friday afternoon/evening - made lamb in a garlic cream sauce (Julie Sahni - Classic Indian Cooking, for all your needs) and watched lots of No Reservations. As usual, this involved much laughter over Bourdain's adoration of pork, discussion on CAFOs, food production, genetically modified food, knowing what you eat, and, well... yeah. Just watch Food, Inc. and you get the gist of the discussion.
Oh! Oh! Oh! Along those lines - two calls from dad, the second one boiling down to "Get up here today, damn it." meant we hit up a new Oriental Supermarket on La Cholla and Orange Grove - Lee Lee - yesterday. This place is awesome. Seriously. And they've got good prices on meat (and produce), a large variety of stuff, and just... well, dad and I kind of drooled... Since dad's pretty much canvassed most of the grocers of this nature in town and about these days only cooks for himself and focuses on Thai and the like food, he was great to go with.
And they have Silkies, ie Blue Chickens. And a good fish counter. And! And! And! I could go on. It boils down to the simple fact that they are well worth checking out. Do so at your earliest convenience, even if they're a bitch to get to.
Oh, and
domnall bought a big pot. Dad pointed it out and said "That would be great for brewing..." and then we turned back to see him putting it in the shopping cart. Hee!
But, back to Christmas and stuff.
I'll shamelessly admit, as I've gotten older (egads! I'm only 23. another reminder I'm about the youngest in my social circles.. *sigh*), Christmas seems to involve less OMG!Presents and more just kind of kicking back and relaxing. And
domnall and I seem to be fond of large presents to ourselves (last year? cookware. this year? pavilion) and a few little ones. I got the Walton Ford Pancha Tantra, which I've been drooling over for years. Taschen being, well, Taschen, it's taken this long to get out something reasonably affordable. I love the publisher dearly, I just shudder at their prices. I also got two Nancy Silverton cookbooks - Bread from La Brea Bakery (my dad on the bagel recipe - "you can get in touch with your jewish roots! even though you're not jewish...") and Pastries from La Brea Bakery (which meant a discussion on the making of puff pastry).
We opted not to hit Chocolate Decadence on Saturday night, instead going to Something Sweet for
shade_scribbler's Birthday-Like Thing. Which, I must say, was well worth it. Nine of us just chatting and stuff for a few hours. I really miss her and
yu_gi_oh_freak as they've moved to San Diego now, but it seems like things are going well and that's what matters.
And then we bought paint and stuff at Home Depot. And worked out a vague schedule for finally tackling the end of the house and the rest of unpacking (yeah, yeah, yeah) and all that jazz. Plus decided to hit IKEA on Friday in the name of a TV center thing and a few bookcases and then seeing Shaun and Megan in Phoenix.
I've got a four-day workweek (meh.), but it's going to be quiet, and we all kind of like that. I suppose I could use sick time or something like that, but I don't really feel like it. It is to be hoarded, it is.

Today? It's a good day.
I finally got a day for the Little Bighorn trip. Or more accurately, I finally asked about it. And found out we have dates but money's not been allocated, so I couldn't get it done beforehand. So I don't feel nearly as bad. But it's looking like Januart 23rd or 24th to February 4th. Goals therefore include get a bunch of machine sewing done so that I can take handsewing with me on the trip and get it done there.
Pre-registered for Estrella as well, which is good. We'll be camping with Dancing Goat, and if Southern was anything to go by, it'll be a good camp. Plus - banners this weekend! And who doesn't like banners? (Note to self - finish sketches beforehand.)
Yesterday wasn't quite so bad either. I mailed my request for a birth certificate and dropped off the stuff needed for Merrill Lynch. Hopefully I can pick up the check by the end of the week and then mail it off and finish up that saga.
Tonight involves finishing up a final. I've still got a chunk to do, but I have a larger chunk finished. Since I seem to have just squeaked in above a 90 in my other class, which means an A, no need to worry about extra credit. This pleases me to no end.
So... Another 3 and a half hours and then home to write on LCSH and user-generated tags a la LibraryThing.

Got stuff signed that I've needed to for too long, did a few errands that have sat around for a similarly long while, and... yeah.
All that I've really got left for this week is to finish a paper by Tuesday at midnight. It's been kind of a weird and strange semester, and I really hope it all ends up alright. I'm pretty damned sure that it will, but I tend to be a bit paranoid about some things. Like this.
Most of the Christmas shopping is finished, just a few little things left to do, but they won't take long. And I've got to start shipping it all off this week.
Now - off to work on my final.

Nov. 29th, 2009 09:59 pmYeah - still in a good mood. though that may be because i'm not squeaking in pain each time i hit my thumb. yeah, got it very nicely with the mandoline, but at least it's starting to heal.
Went over to
Oddly enough, or maybe not, it's kind of soothing. The wheel's a little funky - among other things, in unpacking, we found out it had been in storage for about 15 years (
Of course, I've also been playing way too much Tetris, which may or may not be a good thing. It certainly seems to happily been sucking my soul. Except for the little time I've been playing Folklore, which is an interesting and surprisingly enjoyable little game. (note to self - must. get. the. cait. sidhe.)

Nov. 26th, 2009 09:48 pmWell, all except for the little mishap with my thumb and a mandoline which continues to make life interesting.
Made turkey, scalloped potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, stuffing, cornbread, and several desserts - pumpkin pie, cherry/strawberry crumble, and cheesecake ice cream.
Plans this weekend are, well, very little. There will be cleaning, and setting up of my spinning wheel (*squeal*), and some school work. I am, all told, rather pleased with myself.

Nov. 17th, 2009 09:16 amWell, have Estrella sewing plans plotted out. This is a very good thing. And I'm actually pretty sure it's all doable, which is even better. Stuff won't be perfect, but we're slowly heading in a direction towards more things I'm actually proud of making. Going to get Dom to warp up his loom(s) and make me trim as well, so there shall be prettiness.
And a pavilion. Panther Trader Tent shall be ours!
Plans this afternoon, once I get home, include thus - making dinner and doing schoolwork. I'm rather behind on the discussions for one of my classes, so I'm going to knock out several of them and then get to work on two quizzes, a paper due Friday, and an assignment due Thursday before I can sit back and goof off more.
This sounds like a brilliant plan to me. It really does.
And finally, once more, a great big FU to my body. Namely, the fact that I'm breaking out and it annoys me. Granted, it's slowly clearing up (I think), thanks to some aggressive attacking on my part and a few changes in things. But that doesn't make it any less annoying...

Nov. 16th, 2009 06:34 pmIt's a rather nice dark-green lightweight linen. The only f'ing downside is it's precut into three pieces (I ordered 5 yards). A second look yields that it may have been remnants or something similar as I'm not seeing it on Renaissance Fabric's site at the moment. All things considered though, it's not a tragedy due to it being destined for Viking stuff.
And I do really like the color.
Southern went well.
Home, happy, life is good.

I can't help but feel like I'm missing something. I know what I need to do tomorrow (pack a few small things, hit up Target, and get together with
Let's see, anything else? Not really. There's a bit of personal stuff, which is... not bad. Actually, it's alright.
But damn it, I'm trying!
Other than that, things are good. Assorted RP stuff is nicely sorted. (translation: will get app in for Void and have decided to kill Aeterno in it's tracks. It was decided that, well, we were enjoying ourselves too much to let others in on the fun. *grin*) My various and sundry other pursuits seem to be leveling out, which is... nice. Slowly working on the library here at home and overall, I'm happy.
And finally, a guest blog on

Nov. 9th, 2009 09:00 amOverall, a good weekend, I must say. This is particularly true after the sheer chaos of Friday. Alright, maybe it wasn't chaos so much as completely and utterly draining.
Saturday was the Breeder's Cup, and on a whim, I gave my dad a call. He'd mentioned it was this weekend, as had a dear friend of mine (Jon), who's about the only RTIP person I still really talk to and my source of almost all lovely racing gossip. And I figured "well, it's been too long since I've watched a race, it's a good excuse for dad to come over, why not?"
He brought over the Form, we provided lunch and dinner and a TV (*cackles* I love the fact that we still get some cable channels even though we don't actually have cable, just a really nice internet connection). No bets were placed (mainly because, I think, we didn't feel like leaving), but we did not do half bad at all. One if entitled to pleasure when a very nice longshot wins. Some of the races were wonderful and it was, as always, a pleasure to hear Trevor's voice. The Classic was damned good and I can see the appeal of Zenyatta. The loading was also interesting, if only because I've not seen a scratch at the gate in a long while. Overall, considering that I haven't looked at a Form in over a year, pretty damned good.
Sunday we saw The Men Who Stare At Goats with my dad and a friend of his (all four of us agreed it was very fun) and cleaned. Then,
weavedancer and
dverning and Faye came over for My Name Is Bruce and dinner. And then we tossed on Final Fantasy: Advent Children because, well, I think because Dom could. And it was just fun, which was definitely enjoyable. The house is looking better, and well, we discovered that not having checked the pool in awhile means there are mosquito larve in it. (Which means a trip to Home Depo after the Chiropractor this afternoon so we can shock it to high heaven. Which is fine anyway as we needed propane for the new stove.)
Tonight, need to find stuff for Southern so we can pack tomorrow. Also need to work on school stuff so that I'm not totally behind when we get back. I'm looking forward to it, though, without a doubt. Good chance to get out of Tucson, without a doubt.

Nov. 3rd, 2009 07:59 pmI think sleeping funky is the best bet on that front. This is the second day/evening running this has happened.
School goes well - just plodding along. That seems the most appropriate description, oddly enough. It's not bad, really. I've got stuff set for next term and this one isn't looking too bad as it stands. Which I honestly rather like, all things considered.
Need to dredge up the stuff we'll need for Southern this weekend. Not going to Coronation (alas), but the time is needed for other shit right now. We're going up Wednesday night, which will be interesting, never been up that early.
Caught Zombieland (very good) over the weekend and 9 (decent) at the cheap theater tonight. Will likely catch up with my dad for The Men Who Stare At Goats (looks v. funny) on Sunday.
Oh! And my mom sent a small package of what can only be described as the brownies of doom. These things are little squares of rich, fudgy, goodness.

Oct. 22nd, 2009 05:41 pmWork goes swimmingly. The big project that's been eating my soul is actually pretty much done (finding aid, stickers, and staple removal is what's left) and slowly am gearing up for more fun. Granted, I type this part at work, with some remnants in front of me. because I do need to make sure that they're not duplicates. Which they're not, but well... such is the drill.
Of course, I just saw the next project. The scanner and I shall be renewing our friendship.
The plans this weekend are rather quiet, all things considered. Clean, unpack and catalog more, and have my dad over for dinner. Maybe make ice cream. Maybe buy little paint samples for painting the bedroom.
Music lately has consisted of U2, Abney Park, and 36 Madison Avenue - which is Drew's all-male acapella group. I'm sorry, but their version of Center of Attention? Awesome.
Oh, and I need to curse my dad for getting me addicted to 30 Rock...
