Plans

Southern is now over, and I have to say, it was quite fun. As usual. A bit more laid back in some respects, and the Goats weren't as drama-free as usual but (as usual) we'll get over it an move on. I'm really happy overall with them as a household, and like to think that we function/work well.

That said, it's now time for the mind to go into Estrella prep. After a long while on a bit of a dry spell creatively, I'm back. I know that it's going to be slow going to start, but it feels rather good to just plan creative fun. The list that I've got below is a rough plan of what I'd like to get done in the next few months.

*Clean and mend existing clothes - Most of our SCA clothes are actually in decent shape. I just need to probably re-hem them, and redo the necklines and they'll be much better.
*Weed out older stuff - this goes with the above, though it's mostly my stuff, I suspect.
*Two outfits for Ryan - By which I mean a pair of pants and two shirts, as well as at least one undershirt.
*One outfit for me - While I have a lovely sari I want to cut apart (and confess to having purchased with this dress in mind), I'm not going to attack it yet. Instead, I have lots of linen, and want more good-looking, serviceable clothing. A new hangerock or two are in the works, and an underdress. As before, the white linen one doesn't count.
*Redo/finish coats - Self-explanatory. Our coats are fine and serviceable, but they need to look much nicer and could fit a bit better. I do like the wool lined in fleece, but I should decide if I want a layer of linen as well. Hrmmmmm...

*New tent frame - I'm not allowed near power tools, so Ryan gets this one. One of our friends has a nice set up for his wedge tent, and I want something similar. It's more like an A-Frame in terms of the internal layout.
*New war bed - Say no more. Of course, this can mostly be done using commercial pieces. Ryan gets it as well, because... yeah...

so let's see... southern's this weekend. i've got quite a bit to do, though not as much as i actually expected. ryan's heading up wednesday, i'm going on friday.

should be nice. i've got clothing to wear and i'm in an overall decent mood about the whole event. i'll send most of my things up with him on wednesday, so i just have a small bag of what i forgot.

and yes, i've not bothered with capitalization because i'm hopeless and lazy. this is not something i care about at all right now.

A girl needs to have her vices, right?

Fundamental Imperfection.

This is a Merlin/Arthur fanfic, where the mains are both writers. They meet at a convention, and things sort of progress downhill from there. Let me grab one of the later quotes - it sums things up nicely.

boy meets boy, boy insults boy’s favorite author, boy gives scathing and incendiary reply, boy’s fan throws a book at boy and breaks his arm... and somehow, boys fall in love.

Well, we'll start by saying that the week before last is not a week we shall talk about. We will leave it at that, because it was truly miserable and for a number of reasons.

On the bright side, otherwise, things are going alright.

Since we're definitely going to Coronation (hello exchequer husband), going to finally get around to making something a little better looking for both of us. Or rather, actually properly finishing the projects I've got stuck around. For a number of reasons, we've been sort of quiet lately in the SCA - life kind of crept up and we both needed to deal with it, I suppose. (This, of course, means that some inquiries I made as of late are null and void for the time being. hopefully the people in question haven't forgotten, though, as it's still a goal... anyway...)

Otherwise, stuff's going pretty well. I've not destroyed anything at work, an I'm actually proving to be somewhat competent. Even better, I *like* it.

And now, it's back to work.

PAX is one of those things that can be kind of hard to explain to those who don't game. Mind you, I view 'gaming' rather broadly - as one here should.

It's tabletop, video, board, card... so many different things that you can possibly do. Currently I'm in the bar - all around me, there are games or talk of games. Ryan's off in the annex playing M:tG, and we just picked up several board games.

It feels incredibly relaxed. I've met a number of awesome people already, had some very good conversations, and overall am feeling quite relaxed and happy.

Today as spent wandering the hall (for me) and generally meeting interesting people and hanging out. I got to play a bit of Borderlands 2, and we picked up several games that look quite interesting for a number or reasons. We also got the new 40k box set - which I expect should provide some enjoyment.

Overall, this is how a vacation should be. PAX really is like no over con that I've been to - it's so bloody open. Yes, there are jerks, and jock-esque gamers are viewed with expressions of confusion by a hunk of people... but this place is hoe in a way few others are. It really is a celebration of geekery and fun and gaming - which is perfect. I'm sure that yes, we're probably going to spend more money than we likely *should*, especially judging by today, but it's worth it. We've supported several local gaming stores (well, local to the Seattle area), and we've also had some very good times. Ryan's not doing his 30 straight hours of gaming - but his agreement is to be up until 2 am every morning - when most of the rooms close. As I sit here in teh bar, writing, he's off in the Annex, playing Magic: The Gathering.

Yes, there's a little bit of 'oh shit!' concern over work - but hey, I"m still in a new job (position) and still a little worried about all of it. At least I know that I've got my duck properly in a row - with my vacation messages set up and my away email the same. I just have to remember that I really shouldn't check it on Monday to get ahead of things. That's bad, for many reasons.

And now, while there's more I could ssay - I think I'm going to finish my drink and go upstairs to our room, take a shower, and crash.
swordmage: (walking!piggy)
As usual, my weekend really starts at about 2 pm on Saturday. It was, overall, a good one - apart from Friday involving some of my most enjoyable customers. At least we ended up getting most things sorted out and I think the next week will end up being good.

After work, met up with [livejournal.com profile] raventhourne and Mel. Original plan (Foodie Fleet at Dragoon) was scuttled - Foodie Fleet wasn't present that day, and we got to the Sausage Shop just after they closed. Needless to say, I was a little more than slightly embarrassed. UrbanSpoon to the rescue brought us to Famous Dave's for meat (piggybits!) and then hit Dragoon.

Dragoon was a hit, and I'm pleased to have introduced more people to that place. Afterward, a game of Fortune and Glory was played - quite enjoyable. It's definitely something that I'd like to do more often, I think.

Yesterday, we mostly did things around the house. Well, by that, I mean we started work on the headboard. For awhile now, I've wanted one just because it will look a bit better, and having found a nice little DIY tutorial and putting it off for six months, we finally decided to start tackling it.

This is all part of an agreement that was reached wherein every week we tackle one room of the house. Last week, this was the craft room - now both Ryan and I have space for crafts and most of his 40k stuff has been located. Paints were purchased as well yesterday, which was a good thing. Looks like he's going to, in the near future, have a nice little army ready to go.

Otherwise, things are good. This is Monday, so I am spending the day being quietly relaxing and getting some other things done. Appointments (including the dentist) as well as getting some stuff shipped off that I've been dragging my feet on. I'm overall in a good mood, which is a very nice thing, all things considered.
swordmage: (zombie sheep)
Well, it's the Fourth. For us, there were no plans except me to work (voluntary) and otherwise stay home and keep an eye on stuff. The dog doesn't like fireworks, so it's really best if we stay here.

Overall, today has been a quiet and uneventful day. I opted to work some overtime, and ended up getting out early (so I got six instead of eight hours). The lines were pretty light, so I spent time catching up on back-end work. I also made use of some of the corporate discounts I can get to pick up some licenses for software I want to try out.

Otherwise, we had the AC go out yesterday and it took two trips from the HVAC guys to get the bastard working. They finally solved it - apparently wiring on a part related onto to cold weather was awry. So it's bypassed for now, and we'll toss a few hundred to get it repaired this fall. Better than the $1500 we were thinking it might be for the compressor.

We've also come to the conclusion that, as bad things come in threes, we're reached the end our bad house-related luck for awhile. In between the pool (to be discussed below) and this fiasco, our stand-up freezer died, taking a decent amount of meat with it. And we caught it several days late, meaning when I say the meat was taken with it... Yeah, there was no luck.

But yes, the pool. We've decided that we're going to empty it and fill it in. It'll be a patio by the end of the year, and down the road we're going to put in a proper gaming room. Tabletop, board, 40k, etc... Yes, there will be a Geek Chic table.

Now, I have beer (Dragoon's Saison Blue) and a desire to be utterly useless for the next hour and half or two hours before I crash. I'm up early tomorrow!
swordmage: (Ease the Ache)
Yes, it's been awhile. No, I don't care.

Yesterday was a very interesting day. While mostly laid back, after cleaning the fridge Ryan decided to check the stand-up freezer. At which point he learned that in the last few days aforementioned freezer died. It was running, but it was far from cold - and everything in the freezer was thawed. That last part was discovered because there was green liquid leaking when it was moved and a nice amount of meat juice in the bottom of it.

After cleaning it up, we went and saw Brave (which was awesome and very enjoyable) and then hung around. An impromptu games night followed - Arkham Horror is such an enjoyable game.

Work has been *very* good overall. It's definitely taking some time to get into the swing of things, but I'm working on all of it. Time management, which has never been a strong point of mine, is getting more and more under control. It's definitely a balancing act, but one that I find I'm enjoying. It's a challenge, but well worth it.

I've also dealt, now, with most of the customer types. Saturday's (long) day meant that after work I collected dad and Ryan and suggested that both of them accompany me to The Sausage Shop and Dragoon. It was accepted, which meant that I had a much better end to the day.

Now, I'm happily curled on the couch. I've got The Newsroom on and things are looking actually not half-bad.

And I'm happy, which for me, is the most important thing.
swordmage: (Aloof)
I'm officially a senior advisor at Apple. This is both weird and utterly awesome.

I'm getting into the swing of things. The getting up at 4:15 is throwing me for a loop and seems to be draining me to the point where the last few days have involved naps after work. I'm not sure if it's because I'm actually tired from the job or something else that's happening. Sickness, perhaps? Hells, I hope not.

Regardless, everything is going nicely. I've been spending my spare time painting and also starting going to the gym on a regular(ish) basis. Still don't *like* going to the gym, but at least trying to force myself. I've at least realized that I *enjoy* rowing, and running isn't too bad.

Also working on changing my diet. It comes and goes, and I'm definitely not perfect on it, but I keep telling myself that it's going to be a slow process.

I'm not patient.
swordmage: (zombie sheep)
Mmm, Friday.

I seem to have been sleeping quite a bit this week - Ryan suggested that I'm getting used to this whole full-time thing. 40 hours a week when I'm used to only 24 is quite a change. On the bright side, the pay raise has gone in so my last check was a nice thing to see. Get to start paying off the credit card.

And then bought first editions of Elizabeth Bear's Edda of Burdens trilogy. Signed and personalized. I asked her to surprise me with the personalizations, so that should be interesting.

I've also gotten the schedule for about the next two months. In short, until the summer ends. (after that, I'm going to be bidding for my new schedule.) I've got Sunday and Monday off (which means scribble - wooooo!) and close the rest of the days of the week. Annoying, perhaps, but I'll live. Just going to mean arranging a few things in my life. Considering that the job so far actually seems to be pretty good I'm actually more than a little fine with this.

Otherwise, I'm getting into the swing of things. Working on scrolls and other projects as well as life in general. As I figure out everything (and that's actually going well - yay! for therapists. i don't need to inflict that stuff on anyone besides my husband) it means that I'm settling and getting a better idea of where I stand and what's gong on in my head. Consequently, I'm definitely feeling better about everything in general. I'm slowly starting to work on A&S plans: by which I mean I'm gathering all the research I need. If I don't have it, there's going to be a trip to the UA in the near future and I'll be attacking the journals there as I no longer have access.

Errata

(I have decided, incidentally, that this is one of my all-time favorite words.)

So San Francisco was lovely. Honestly, I could have very happily spent another few days there and just happily wandered. Eventually I'll even upload the photos - though there aren't too many.

I think that what it means is we need to go back. There's so much more I think we could have had fun with, regardless. Plus, some more hours at the museums are always really nice.

Anyway, it was a good trip. The Jean Paul Gaultier show at the deYoung was gorgeous but I admit that I adored The Cult of Beauty at the Legion of Honor even more. It was all the Victorian Avant Garde and so there were scads of Pre-Raphealite and similar things. Furniture, wallpaper, paintings, sculpture, clothing, etc. In terms of, well, post-Medieval the late 19th century is one of my all-time favorite periods.

They also had a few Beardsley pieces. I nearly squealed in glee.

Otherwise, stuff is mostly quiet. I'm in training of some form or another this week and next. The sheer amount of information that is crossing my screen is nearly overwhelming and once more I find myself incredibly scared/worried about how it's all going to come out. Of course I was like this before I started taking calls last year and look how that turned out. Things are processing for my senior advisor position and I'm, well, really happy.

Got the grade for the one class, as well as my diploma. There we go, I'm totally done. Maybe at some point I'll bother dredging up the BA and get that framed as well...

In terms of the SCA, now that I'm starting to settle down into a schedule and way of doing stuff, I'm actually slowly getting back on the wagon of arts and sciences. I've got a number of plans and at long last I have the time (sort of) to get them under way. I have books either here or coming and the supplies for most everything fabric-related that I'd like to make. Not sure if I'll manage anything for Kingdom A&S, though I'm going to try and brush up a few pieces of writing. Hopefully the schedule will allow for attendance at least at one day.

I downloaded no few number of articles from the UA's library database before my access was revoked, and they really do run a wide range of topics. I realize that above all, I adore the learning aspect of things. This probably has something to do with the fact that I tend to buy books almost obsessively. I may not need them now, but they are something that will be useful down the road.

Which is part of why I'm plotting an Anglo-Saxon overload in the next year. Bwahaha!
swordmage: (Merlin the Happy Pig)
Is it wrong that one of the things I'm most looking forward to with graduating is the fact that I can properly attack the (growing) pile of books?

The plans

Apr. 4th, 2012 04:02 pm
swordmage: (Light In Hand)
Post-war life is pretty good overall.

Due to classes and a general sense of things finally settling into where they should be (or at least enough that I'm comfortable enough to relax), I've decided that it's high time I actually did some things SCA-related.

Currently, I'm happily working on an embroidered white scarf for a good friend. I decided (randomly) that he needed to have a new one for non-field use and this was a very good excuse. First thing I've done in a long while (and I wasn't too good to start), but it's not looking too bad. If all goes well, there may be more of them.

Otherwise, most of my plans for the next few months involve modifications to already existing clothing. Or making more naalbound stuff. I think Mammon's going to be better for socks than Oslo. Anyway, back to the clothing topic, what I intend to do so far is listed below.

-redo/fix blue 14th century dress
-finish brown underdress
-take apart copper overdress and redo for use in Rus
--make medallions for it! (horse and goat)
-adjust boy tunic
--finish white boy tunic

-make 14th century fighting clothing to go with Ryan's 14th century armor.

Oh yes, and I'm going to take apart our coats and remake them so they fit better. And decorate them.

War Wrap-Up

Estrella was quite good, I have to say. We had a good time with the Goats (as is usual), and everything seems to be actually pretty sane and stable. First event in the new tent was definitely a success, and have some good ideas as to how to make it better. I'm pretty sure that everything's actually looking like it will end up pretty good in the end.

What's good is that with everything being the way it is, the creative bug has come back. Most certainly I'm *not* going to be finding myself in a repeat of this year where I'm throwing stuff together at the last minute. Yes, I say this every year (and also say that the creative bug is returning), but I think that stuff's actually properly looking up this time.

Hopefully I can actually get myself to finish some scrolls now. And some sewing of clothing. I've got a few things that are going to be taken apart and some that are going to be reworked. I should look better and be happier.

Hrmmm... do I want to see about entering some A&S soon? I think I need a few good projects to keep me occupied and happy.

Lists

Mar. 16th, 2012 08:01 pm
swordmage: (devious willa)
Estrella sewing list:

-PJ pants for Ryan and I
-short sleeved tunic for me
-underdress
-finish white tunic

This is *very* doable.

Also, we're looking at commissioning a full sized camp bed. Ryan and I keep saying we'll make one, and considering that it's not happened yet, we've decided that we might as well look at having it made.

Sometimes, it's worth it to just fork over the money.

Stuff

Mar. 16th, 2012 10:52 am
swordmage: (Default)
Aaahhh, Friday.

The good news: about 1000-1500 words left for academia to write by the end of the weekend/middle of next week. This includes the two ePortfolio entries I've got left as well as some journal entries for the class of dullishness.

Otherwise, stuff remains good. Life is pretty calm overall, apart from having to push myself to get schoolwork done because it's so incredibly mind-numbingly dull. I know it was intended as sort of a beginners class, but I really wasn't expecting it to be as beginners as it is. I'm getting the hang of naalbinding and actually getting kind of decent at it. I certainly really like it because it seems to also help me focus at work. That last part could be a coincidence, but I'm not going to argue if it works.

Actually, there's really no bad news to counter this. Tonight I'm going to be at least cutting out fabric for pj pants (mine have owls. this makes me happy) and a tunic. (Yes, I will now have a lavender tunic to go with the green Rus pants. It makes me feel good, and that's what matters.)
swordmage: (devious willa)
So, I managed to dredge up what SCA clothes I've got (I don't know, I've reached a point where I feel like 'garb' really doesn't quite work - or at least is more awkward than it should be).

Ryan, the lucky duck, is all set. I, on the other hand, have a bit of sewing to do. I'm hoping to pull out one tunic and a pair of underdresses. Oddly enough, I think that this is more than possible, all things considered.

Oh yes, and pj pants. There will be some.
swordmage: (Lyra and Iorek)
We're not going to try and say that I"m alive or anything. It's not worth it (even though it's true).

As of late, my life's been dominated by two things - work and school.

Work's been really busy. Or at least it's been keeping me busy. Seeing as I'm currently trying to get them to hire me full-time, I'm pretty willing to give them a hunk of my soul. I do at least know I've got a pretty good chance of being hired part-time on a more permanent basis, which is a relief. But I'm pushing for full-time, which does mean that I'm happy to give them a serious commitment to show what they can expect from me.

It's got the one downside of meaning that I'm pretty much devoted to it and everything's been revolving around it.

Of course, there's also school. I'm nearly done with this bloody degree, and mostly just have things left to write. The fact that I consider it 'bloody' should be a good indication that I'm ready to be over with it. We'll leave it at that, ok?

Estrella's also coming up. Just need to find pants of Dom's and he's set. I, on the other hand, need to dredge up a bunch of things because I seem to have very little to wear. The fact that my weight's been fluctuating (upwards, it seems) and I'm really not in the best of moods has *not* been helping me all that much. But at least we're working on the mood/mental stuff which is slowly helping everything else.

Oh yes, and pre-cook. Hrmmm....

And because I like the idea and I can.

Pay it forward 2012: I promise to make something home-made for the 1st 5 people who comment. They must in turn post this & make something for the 1st 5 people who comment on their post. The rule is that it must be handmade & delivered before the end of 2012. It can be as simple as a cup of coffee! :-) Let's take away the doomsday predictions of 2012 & make this the best year ever!
