swordmage: (Bookstore!)
So - head home tomorrow. Woot!

I'll admit - this trip has been really good. I've gotten to know the other archivists better (useful, as I'd love to stay here) and had fun. We got off early today, and spent time wandering the Plaza area. I'll admit, I did some shopping - the Spanish food store also stocked North African spices... I now have Ras El Hanout! i apparently was the only one who did any shopping - but i don't much care)

But overall, it's been good. I don't think I've given off the "weirdo" vibe that I do sometimes. *grin* Mind you, I haven't been drinking a ton, but then again, I don't usually. So I don't much care. I have decided to be a bit of a stick-in-the-mud tonight, and opted to not join in the beer-y fun of college football. I just don't like the latter much, and besides - I need sleep I think...

Finally, my phone has started to develop grey lines on the bottom of the screen. Fucker.
swordmage: (:P)
Maryland was... frustrating at times. I was exceedingly glad to be back. However, our suitcase got lost in the great void that is United, so I was missing stuff I'd intended to take to Santa Fe.

Overall though - the highlight was Washington DC. I feel like something more substantial is due, but can't think of anything. It was a frustrating trip overall, for multiple reasons. *sigh*

So, after a grand total of less than 12 hours back home, I'm now in Santa Fe. I shall be coming back on Saturday evening. I have a large-ish room to myself here, and we'll all putz out for dinner in a few hours.

Oddly enough, the trip up here was quite nice.
swordmage: (Damn?)
DC was squeal. We didn't get much in terms of books (alas) but saw some wonderful stuff. (Also was an idiot with the Metro and wasted some money, but I'm going to happily call it "idiot tax" and not think about it.) I shall upload photos when we get back (and probably not until after Santa Fe). Ryan's family is doing fine, we're staying with his mother, and his sister, brother-in-law, and their kids are alright.

I shall provide a further update/wrap-up at the end of the trip. What's noteworthy now is simply that we will not be getting a specific model of Acura and I am not a massive fan of in-car turn-by-turn directions. Our iPhones do the job just as well, if not better... (they, at least, are unlikely to direct us to make a right turn that would have resulted in a 20 ft drop onto a highway.)

As for New Year's, well...

See - I'm not going to bother with an itemized list of things I want to accomplish. I know myself, and it's pointless. I've tried it, and even if I do it, I still feel like I didn't. Instead, I'm going to just stick down a few things I'd like to accomplish.

A) Continue on my quest to eliminate processed stuff from my diet. Which really is a simplification of "eat better." And I successfully started that this year, [livejournal.com profile] domnall being dragged along for the ride. I enjoy cooking, and all that fun stuff. I really do. We've gotten a bunch of new cookbooks, utensils, and such in the past year, and I look forward to using them all in the coming one. I'm not a big believer in "miracle foods" - instead if you eat right, all should be well. Mind you, there's more to it all than that, but i don't mind. I've been reading far too much in the last year in terms of cooking, the SLOW food movement, and so on. I like it all, I really do.

Expect much talk about it on here.

B) Get our SCA stuff, well... better. We have linen and wool, and the goal is new hats, coats, shirts, pants, and underdresses. I want to work on making both of our sets nicer quality, less costume-y, and just overall work on at least our personal illusion of quality. (Yes, we've still got a large nylon tent. The pavilion, while wonderful, will likely come when we get a house. There are various reasons for this, so we'll just ignore it for now. M'kay?) A month ago, I'd have said "be more active" - but as [livejournal.com profile] domnall's going to be the new Exchequer (or so it appears *grin*), I don't think that'll be a problem.

C) I thought about putting something like "be less snarky/bitchy/etc" but it wouldn't work. I'm at least going to make an effort to be more... tolerant? Something like that...
swordmage: (choose life)
So, I decided to take Monday off - meaning no work until I head to Santa Fe on the 4th. It's kind of odd to have this long off, but I'm looking forward to it.

Christmas plans are simple - dad's coming over tomorrow night for dinner, and we'll open presents then. Nice, simple, and really - why not?

It's odd, this is the first time in as long as I can remember that I won't be going to Mass on either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. I don't know, I could, but I feel like it's pointless when I am not, well, currently practicing...
swordmage: (Red or blue)
Why yes! I have done nothing productive this weekend.

And really, why should I? Classes are done, grades are posted, application for SIRLS is mailed, and oh yes, I called to get my room for Santa Fe.

Called dad, he'll be over on Christmas Eve - there will be dinner and presents that night. Goose, however, was overpriced (at least for the fact we were just going to be feeding the three of us). So we went with duck.
swordmage: (Thoughtful)
Well, semester is over in all ways. It's quite nice actually.

My grad school app has been mailed. Still need to finish the financial aid part, but I figured that at the least, it would would take the thing off my mind. And that is good.

Ordered Absolute Sandman Vol. 4 - the 25% off coupon only comes once a year, and it was this or Absolute Watchmen. Sandman will complete the set, and besides, 4 will contain The Kindly Ones (which has some of my favorite art, including Cluracan and the stag) and The Wake (which may be my favorite arc - or may be tied with The Doll's House for that honor).

I have projects planned for Estrella. Mainly of the clothing variety. Hats, coats, shirts, and bag trousers for [livejournal.com profile] domnall.

This weekend - I plan on sleeping and doing nothing useful.

Except trying to track down a goose...
swordmage: (boobies! tits!)
I am exceedingly glad we went to today's event, even if we had to leave early - final tomorrow morning. *sigh* Now, if only Hasaki would post my mid-term grade so I can get my timesheet in... Need to know if I'm going to take the final.

However, I got the fox pelts cut up for hats. (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] raventhourne's instructions - even if I did blank and think she meant a straight razor instead of electric shaver. *headdesk* I'd be clueless and they'd end up totally mangled otherwise. Instead, we shall have hats for Estrella!)

[livejournal.com profile] domnall's got his 40k army (as of now) base-coated, and is happily painting them. They look quite nice - not as good as [livejournal.com profile] dverning's, but he's just starting. *grin*

I don't think tomorrow's final will end up being all that miserable, answer 64 out of 70 questions multiple choice, and I've got a passable grasp of contemporary Chinese history/civilization. (What? I have had peculiar reading choices over the years.)

Honestly, I'm feeling cheerier than I have for several days. The semester's almost over, and nearly all our Christmas shopping is finished. Unfortunately, my father is exceedingly hard to shop for sometimes, and this was one of them - until I found Paul Theroux's new book Ghost Train to the Eastern Star, which is about taking the same trip he took in The Great Railway Bazaar 30 years ago.

Deciding factor? *skims* "Hrmmm... I think I may need to borrow this!"
swordmage: (Ease the Ache)
Signs your day isn't going well.

Despite bringing an umbrella - there is no rain.

The lock on your locker refuses to work. Bolt cutters are your friend.

You finish welding, notice it's already time for your next class (which you skip - not like anything interesting would be covered anyway), and still feel like your project's crap. Also, there is soot all over your nose. You are simply told to look in a mirror before your next class.

Upon getting to work, you're happily attaching images when you realize the entirety of the Texas Mission scans have been eaten. As in, I know I scanned them, but they're not there. At least it's only like 20 cards, but still. Annoying...

I've got Wired and The New Yorker to read, damn it...

Now, to finish at least a working-like copy of my letter of intent (I've given up on it not sounding pleading - but would anyone be willing to read it over).

Just fuck it all.
swordmage: (Ease the Ache)
For some reason - this week has dragged like a... screw it, I can't think of a good analogy.

At least after Tuesday, the immediate academic work was finished. But that doesn't mean that everything hasn't still been damned slow. The last two days it's felt like I'm dead on my feet. At least next brings little, and I'm only looking to sit one final. (If it's optional, and the only way to raise my grade by a letter is score something physically impossible: I'll save my sanity.)

I tend to happily forget about the Abbey's (my high school) Annual Fund until my class rep pesters me. I'll have to get back to her as it was someone I got along with and she seemed at least interested in what's going on.

Mmmm - [livejournal.com profile] domnall's cooking dinner.
swordmage: (Abomination)
Thanksgiving, as I said before, went quite well. We're almost through turducken leftovers.

Currently, I think the primary protein component for the week in dinner is lamb. I love lamb, it's probably my favorite meat. The cost has gone up a little at 17th street - we've currently got a seven pound bone-in leg of it in the fridge. I need to hack it up, particularly because I plan on making lamb stew with it at some point this week.

I will admit - the weekend mostly ended up with us sleeping and running some errands. I feel like I've not gotten much sleep as of late...

Need to get working on Estrella stuff. First things I want to finish are furry hats and coats. Then some dresses for me, bag trousers and shirts for [livejournal.com profile] domnall.

The chiropractor I've started going to? I need to suppress giggles every time I go.

Friday gaming goes well. Swimmingly actually. We're playing DnD 4th right now. And for those of you who are familiar with Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar - my tiefling warlock has acquired the equivalent of Need. *sigh*

Oh yes, and [livejournal.com profile] raventhourne - you mentioned having easy hat patterns. Could you by chance email them to me?
swordmage: (Lyra and Iorek)
Let's see what's going on in Willa's world...

A) Semester is rapidly coming to an end. Grades are a mixed bag, as usual. *sigh and shrug*

B) Have started the application process for grad school. Have asked both teachers who I want to write me letters - and both have agreed. Need now to ask my boss. Even though I only need two letters, I think having that third will help. I'm putting archiving as one of my interests and it shouldn't hurt.

C) Extra time in Santa Fe! Also, if I get into grad school - they're going to look into keeping me.

D) Thanksgiving plans are puttering along. I have, in my finite wisdom, decided to cook everything myself. well, [livejournal.com profile] domnall is certainly helping. Granted, this is probably actually less work than it sounds like. It's also serving as a jump-start for general cooking. I cleaned the fridge - a depressing thing, as I should have done it a week ago - and now need to re-fill it.

E) I have wool and linen. Since [livejournal.com profile] domnall and I both need new SCA stuff, I decided to bite the bullet and order a better-quality of fabric. Viking-era, here we come! (Also - where in particular do you lot go for leg-wraps...?)

Also - [livejournal.com profile] budgetscadian

F) Also, there shall be sewing of pj-pants. Need to get some fleece though...

G) Damn it - I may not be a total period-perfectionist, but I'll admit, the troll over on you-know-where really annoyed me. Yes, yes, I know, troll... Shouldn't grouse... It did remind me, again, that I really need to make sure I have appropriate head-coverings for Estrella.

Thus far, Estrella purchase plans are more along the lines of supplies for various things. (and trying not to drool over any of this stuff, namely the first set of brooches...)

And finally - damn this illness going around. My dad had it at one point (he told me over the phone), [livejournal.com profile] domnall had it, and now I do. Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of being able to take sick days - namely because I'm running a bit short on cash right now - and so have been drugging myself up and going to work.
swordmage: (Abomination)
First off - I bloody hate welding.

Secondly - coffee and rugelah is doing much to help my mood.

This week has been long, to say the least. And somewhat chaotic. I'm glad it's over. This weekend should be fairly low-key: some Thanksgiving cooking, some school-work, and cleaning.
swordmage: (Whee!!)
It's nice - in the week or so since Southern, [livejournal.com profile] domnall and I have been much more social than in the month or so beforehand.

I intend on keeping this up.

Granted, this weekend we were mostly solitary - cleaning, some stuff that was long overdue, and school-work I really needed to do meant we didn't hit the Demo today. Doubt that tomorrow will be hit either due to other stuff. *le sigh* So be it.

Plans this week involve dinner and goofing off with several people. There shall be WoW, but not nearly as much as one might expect. Woot!
swordmage: (Aloof)
War was, bluntly, a blast.

Officially - we were camped in the nebulous form that was centered around Sable Axe - the household a good friend of ours (Bryan/Arion) belongs to. The household is headed by a great Baron and Baroness (one Friedrich (maker of the apple brandy that brings joy, I should add) and his wife Katrina), who were quite fun to be with. Many, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] reynier for offering the space. There was also Lorelai, and not-quite-attached-but-not-turning-down-pancakes [livejournal.com profile] dverning and [livejournal.com profile] weavedancer.

I spent the majority of my war it seems either at Troll or down at the rapier field. (Which made sense, as I was surrounded by rapier fighters...) Yeah, I didn't submit all the Troll hours, but still...

[livejournal.com profile] domnall (who seems to keep lj around solely for the purposes of lurking/commenting *sigh*) mostly lived at Troll. Primarily, there was no space in the car for his armor. Aside from that, the new helm actually needs to get the holes drilled in it. There's also the small matter of his gorget - which is somewhat warped, and is causing him to worry. (Naturally, this wasn't noticed until after he'd bought it.)

When he goes out on Tuesday nights, I've decided I'll give rapier a shot.

[livejournal.com profile] domnall also got to try out his ebelskiver pan again. This time, with the Pumpkin Spiced Pancake Mix (which he bought for the tin, I should add) and apple butter filling. To say they were a hit was an understatement - and people, they'll make an appearance at Estrella, whether you got them or not. We shouldn't be hard to find.

We got everything packed up yesterday at a nice time, and were set to head out before what was looking to be a large and nasty storm. The wind and dust were annoying, but we coped. *grin* Our lot got set, then went to help [livejournal.com profile] raventhourne and [livejournal.com profile] posadnik_ivan get everything packed, followed by a woman who was camped near them from Mons. The wind really was getting nasty, and the lighting was pretty. When we hit the flying away popup, I told [livejournal.com profile] domnall to stay in the car. The dust seemed to be picking up, and as he was driving, didn't want him to spend the trip hacking. Dust + boy = misery.

Stopped at the Sauce on Oracle/Ina to get dinner before we got home. Called dad, and he joined us, which was nice. Need to upload photos later (even though I didn't get a ton).

Today - I decided to make use of my Dean's Excuse to get one more day of sanity. Going to go into work early and get some extra hours in. Blues Traveler tonight!
swordmage: (Approval!)
GRE is finally over, thank the gods.

The nice thing about taking it as a computer-based test was that I got my grades immediately. And the result was satisfying - not abysmal, but respectable. I am quite pleased.

Mind you, the cost of this was that we did not go to Coronation. While I am rather sad about this fact, at the same time, the call of getting stuff together for grad school was a wee bit more important.

As an aside - looking like it may be just [livejournal.com profile] domnall and I again this year at Southern. The other parties have all had things come up recently, in some cases very, very not good, and so there's a good chance they'll be unable to make it... *shrug* So be it.
swordmage: (Merlin the Happy Pig)
*deep breath*

*exhale*

So, apart from being unable to get any work on my sculpture done this morning (ggrrrrr), I am happy. Since I was on campus, I decided to stop by and see one of the professors I want a letter of rec for. She happily agreed (!) and we talked a little about grad school for me. Went well, I am happy. And a teensy bit less worried about it all.

The first order of fabric (linen, to be exact) has arrived. It's lovely - I'm looking forward to using it. This is mostly destined to be new SCA clothing for [livejournal.com profile] domnall, and I fully intend to actually take a little more time with it and make sure it's good. What I'm really looking forward to is getting the wool. Now, I'll need buttons... (any recommendations?)

It's nice overall, we've been working around the apartment. Actually, [livejournal.com profile] domnall is doing most of the cleaning, I've been doing school-work. It's been frustrating to try and live in a messy apartment - can't find things and all that fun stuff. That said, it's a slow process, but things are looking up.

Plans this weekend involve GRE and, well, baking. I need to bake... It's hitting that point where it's becoming a calling. *grin*

And possibly in the realm of TMI: This new BC had better adjust, and soon. I haven't been this miserable during the "off" week in a long while.
swordmage: (Up to no good)
Well, had dad over for dinner. This occurs every few weeks - there is food, discussion of politics, books, cooking, and the end of the world as we know it. Oh yes, and watch whatever - previously it was Weeds and currently it's Californication.

Tonight was no different. However, I tried cooking duck for the first time. Good lord was it tasty. And duck fat? It truly is the stuff of legend. Yes, I am praising an animal fat here. But the potatoes, which I just tossed into the roasting pan, got saturated with the stuff. With rosemary? The result was rich, smooth, and subtle.

What? I like food...

That said - I didn't get my list completely done this weekend. However, I did get cleaning done, and also ordered a bunch of wool and linen for projects. (Including a lovely dark brown wool for a coat... I even ordered extra.) I shall be kept happily occupied in the lead-up to Estrella. And [livejournal.com profile] domnall and I shall be nice and warm there.

So...

swordmage: (Brain scrub)
Today, when we hit 17th Street (which seems to have become the source of all grocery shopping), in a fit of "of what the hell!", I picked up a bottle of Mrs Meyers All Purpose Cleaner.

Honestly, I've never had too much of a problem with chemical cleaners. They don't do odd things to my throat/when I breathe/etc, but I've been curious as to how this stuff stands up for a while. So, in an effort to get out of school-work, I filled a bowl with warm water, added some of the stuff, and went to work in the kitchen.

Good lord. A little elbow-grease and a short bit of time later: cleanliness! Grease? Gone. Sticky spots? Gone. Hands? Smell faintly of lavender.

Sure, it's a little more expensive than the commercial stuff, but I am liking the lack of a bleach smell when I'm done, there's not stinging or anything when I stick my hand into the water (as has happened a few times in the past), and the fact that in the back of my mind there's no "should I be worrying about this around food?"
swordmage: (Time To Melt)
1. Study for GRE.
2. Redo CV.
3. Come up with rough draft of paper for my professions class.
4. Essay for Chinese Civ.
5. Write 19th cent midterm.
6 and 7. Start on Goya paper(s).
8. Work on art project - sanding and sketching on design for carving.

I should point out - by this point, my Chinese Civ class has fallen to the bottom of "classes I care about" list.
swordmage: (Aloof)
Note to self: neck is unhappy after moving 70-some boxes.

That said - got to start actually cataloging today. Granted, it's from a previously existing list, so not too much work on my end, but it's no less interesting. Long-term (ie: after my BA), I think prospects to stay there look good.

In terms of around the apartment, it's progressing. Books are moving, things are getting organized, and we're both rather happy.

Who am I to complain?

Also, in case anyone else is interested, [livejournal.com profile] kittenfemme (aka [livejournal.com profile] holly_housedyke sent me an email saying there's a large sale on at Fashion Fabrics Club.
