Hit the St Felix practice last night, which was good if... interesting at times.

However, I would like to make note of two things:

1 - When interested parties approach us, don't mob them. If one person is speaking, let them do so. I may not be the most knowlegeable person there, but I can answer the basic questions and point them in the right direction.

2 - We're a recreation group, not a reenactment one. I know the latter sounds cooler, and some people work towards higher accuracy (woot! I think it's great and want to as well), but it's not true.

@ reenactment vs. recreation: You're right. I get far too sloppy with my use of those terms sometimes.

And context matters. If I'm talking to you, or any number of other people you can guess, it may slip in. But I know you know the difference and it's fine.

But I think with potential newbies, it's really good to differentiate. Recreation is a bit less... restrictive. You see reenactment and think highly accurate, inclusive, etc.

And I try to remember we all start somewhere. And as we get money, time, resources, we get better. I'm at a point now where, for example, I think that Dom and I can really start taking things further. And we *want* to. (I could go into a long thing about desire, but this isn't the place.) So those first steps are being taken.

True - I usually like to emphasize the creation part, cuz seeing the end product is intimidating.

It really can be. You see it and think "Shit, I need to be able to do that?" But if you say that you made it, it's more like "Oh, you worked on learning that. I could probably do it."

The statement I've found I keep using, though I have no recollection of where I heard it (beyond a Ren Faire vs SCA thing) is that the SCA is a personal thing. You do things because they make *you* feel good. And I think the creation part is a good example of that.

The last one I was at, I wanted to punch Fergus in the nuts. Geez, back off already.

Had tentative plans to be there last night, but decided to spend the evening in bed and feverish instead. Bleh.

He was fairly quiet this week, unless summoned. What happened here was that a pair of girls saw rapier and stopped to watch. I started talking to them and before I knew it, three St Felicians had mobbed them to all talk at once.

I just gave up.

I would have liked to see you. Ended up doing work with Carys, which is good. I really could use more one on one time with people, if only to help get it all into my head.

I think the key word there is "girls."

Also, I have found that I sometimes have difficulty discerning between re-creation and rec-reation.

LOL.

I can understand, though I admit to never quite having thought of that aspect. Hrmmm...

I still get to call it reinactment when I'm talking about it to people in my program and grownups I'm trying to impress, right?

Mobbing happens. Ignoring happens. I try to strike the middle ground and give feedback to others when they mob/ignore.

Also, college students who are total nerds who suddenly find themselves relative experts on something? They get really excited and all talk at once.

Yes, yes you are.

*cackles* I was in an unusually cynical mood last night, and it was, perhaps, heightened by the comments of "let just one person talk" by others. An idea that failed.

I keep forgetting sometimes I was probably like that at times... *hang head*
