I've been re-bonding with my copy of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street recently. I'd forgotten how much I love that musical.

Story aside, it's got some of the most wonderful lyrics and music in it. When I listen, I can imagine the action as it goes on. Parts have this over-the-top, operatic feel to them. I've got the original cast recording (actually, highlights from, but it's only missing a song or two) and there's something about Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou that is just.. guh!

She's just so conniving, and he's so earnest. Listening to her sing The Worst Pies in London is fun, with the music emphasizing her movement as she makes her pies for Todd, and she exudes the perfect amount of pity-requesting.

And he's... well, not deranged, but a character I find myself liking more each time I listen. Not only does Cariou's voice have this great richness, but there's this quiet desperation and anger under it. Granted, part of it's the character and the lyrics, but there's only so much they can lend to a character.

I've mentioned Sweeney Todd to people as being a very good musical before, and when I tell them what it's a bout in response to the inevitable question, they're put off. Clearly, it just means I need to say "listen, and we'll talk after you've heard it."

Because everyone needs some Sondheim in their life, and Todd is as good as any. and into the woods rocks as well)

I've rented that and probably should buy it Because, yes, Bernadette Peters rocks so completely and utterly.
