Mar. 25th, 2005 01:01 pmNow, to give a very annotated backstory, I'm Roman-Catholic, but not really practicing. I'm not entirely sure if I believe all that is taught by the Church, and I'm trying to figure it all out. I attend a religious/pricate school (run by Benedictine monks), and so have to go to Masses which are held on class days. All students do, no matter their religion.
So last night being Holy Thursday and all, I went. At this particular mass, the celebrant washes the feet of twelve students in a re-enectment of what Jesus did. actually, it's just one foot, and he really only poors water on over the foot, but still
So when they start washing the feet, the pair of girls sitting on my left start giggling. I'm not sure if it was at what he was doing, or at someting one of them said, but they were giggling, particularly the one next to me. Giggling until tears were in her eyes and the bench was shaking.
I was livid. Livid. I probably should have turned to her and suggested that she shut up, but we were in the first row and I wanted to keep out of it. The sheer disrespect of it all was not amusing.
Maybe I was just being overly sensitive, as the priest celebrating was my godfather, just appoinbted as Prior for the next three years, and this was his first big all-students-required-to-attend Mass. But I don't think that there's a good excuse for their behavior. It's not like either wasn't a practicing Catholic-they knew all the responses, when to stand, when to kneel, got communion, etc. So there really was no excuse. The sheer rudeness of it all was baffling. And they were both seniors.
The kicker? Upon finishing their little giggle-fest, the one next to me turns and asks Do I have makeup on my face?
I swear, if I was a violent person, and we were somewhere else, I'd have punched her.

People can at least show a little respect for other peoples' beliefs.
Did I make it clear that they weren't showing disrespect fo rsomeone else's religion, but for their own? Because if they weren't Catholic, they probably wouldn't have gone up to communion, known exactly when to stand/sit/kneel, as well as the appropriate responses to what the celebrant said.

Please be joking.
If they're not going to act like adults, then why should they be treated as such? That behaviour is something I'd expect from young children, so treat them as such until they learn to act their age.
