"... I saw no reason then why hell should not have, so to speak, visibe branch establishments throughout the earth..."
-Fifth Business by Robertson Davies

And by the way, I was glad to see Smarty Jones featured (sort of) in Time this week. Made me happy.

However, that happiness quickly wore off upon thinking of the whole thing. Because I think his owners did the industry a great disservice by retiring him. True, the breeding rights are what sent him away, but as you'll have no idea what the offspring will be like for a minimum of three years, why not keep him around? At least for another year or two?

Because he was a good thing. People (and by that I mean those unfamiliar with racing) knew who he was. Remember Funny Cide? He's still out there. granted, he's a gelding so the breeding bets are off and I'll maintain that he's simply the best of a bad crop, but that doesn't stop the fact that he's done reasonably well this year

There're a multitude of reasons why horse racing is not as popular as it once was. I'm not going to get into them now, but I'll say that one of the reasons is because no horse sticks around long enough for the public to get to know him.

And that's a real pity.
