I just saw Groundhog Day. It's officially one of my favorite movies.
And of course, today was the Kentucky Derby. Which means musings are in order.
Amazing race. It usually is, but today was just phenominal. Smarty Jones did wonderfully, as expected. I didn't stick money on him, the odds were going to be a bit low I thought. Actually, he went off at a decent price.Personally, I stuck $2 to win on both Imperialism and Pollard's Vision. Didn't make anything, but was happy.
I'm very happy for the team. The jockey, Steward Elliot, is 39, though he's won over 3000 races, he's been riding at the smaller tracks. This is his first mount in the Derby, and he's won. Same for the trainer, who appears to have sworn he'd never go to the Derby unless he had a horse who could win. (Sounds a bit like me, though I've sworn I'll never go unless I have a horse runing.) The owner is 3 days shy of his 78th (or is it 73rd?) birthday. Bless his heart.
Of course, as usual, this leads to the question "Can he make the Triple Crown?" Don't get me wrong, I'd love a Crown winner as much as the next person. But to some extent, I'm apprehensive. Probably because I want the next Triple crown winner to be a horse that stands head and shoulders (or whithers, as the case may be) above the others. Smarty Jones may be a hell of a horse right now, but I want to see how the Preakness shapes up. I've got 2 weeks.
I'm going to wait until Monday, when I see the charts for more of an educated opinion.
