If you have not been following this, it's now finished and a very interesting read. Bamboozling Ourselves, a seven-part series by Errol Morris at the New York Times.

It mainly deals with art forgeries during WWII in Germany - the Vermeers of one Hans Van Meegeren. However, he also deals with a number of other things related to why he succeeded.

Kind of hard to explain - just read it.
