Last night, I was channel surfing and came across the end (and then I watched a bit of the beginning of) the MTV Movie Awards.

First off - How is Sweeney Todd a VILLAIN!?

Secondly - How can the Pussycat Dolls be considered music? It's just... horrid.

Lastly - Viva la Vida is infectious. Must buy album soon.

Sweeney Todd is a twisted fiend who has been driven insane by his lust for revenge. His obsessions push him over the edge of sanity, and into the dark void of madness. As a result, many innocent people (and others not so innocent) find that their lives are horrifically, and irrevocably, altered.

Like Hannibal Lecter, Norman Bates, Charles Foster Kane, Darth Vader, Alex Forrest, and dozens of others in cinema's pantheon of evil, Sweeney is not a character that the audience is supposed to truly despise.

We are supposed to cheer on his mis-deeds, and delight in his carnal eccentricities. He is the main character after all. People seldom buy tickets to spend two hours in the dark with a character that they actively dislike. For example, who roots for the dumb teenagers in horror films? No one. We Want Freddy & Jason to dismember their victims. (Well, you do if you enjoy those movies. I don't.)We want "Jaws" to devour the entire population of Amity Island. We want Darth Vader to throw his whiny son down the reactor shaft. The same holds true for Sweeney. Still, that does not excuse the horror of his crimes, or change the fact that he is, most definitely, a villain.

I believe the logic goes:

Kills people = villain

And the MTV award for "best antihero" probably asks too much of the audience.
