It's rather odd to be happily reading one's New York Times and to see, prominently in the middle of the first section, an ad for the upcoming Sotheby's Contemporary Art Sale, with the hideos Rothko that's the prize of the show next to it.


Then again, I hate Rothko. I don't care about how influential he was, or how he was one of the first, I just do not like him...

from what I have seen his art isn't much better than what a three year old with finger paints could do.

For all I may dislike him, he's notable because he was one of the first to do what he did, and no matter what it does provide inspiration for later artists of the same genre.

I think I'm still minorly amused that Sotheby's took out an add, and there's a phone number of inquiries. Because honestly, anyone remotely interested probably knows the second it came to light.

Then again, I'm not much of a fan of that whole post-war school, and probably hopelessly biased. And at least it is one of his more visually pleasing pieces...
