The sky was pitch-black when she arrived. Snow blew all about and the wind howled as the young woman swung down from the white and silver dragon she was mounted on. She patted the large nose that was thrust toward her, making sure she would be all-right.

They're expecting you? came a deep, melodic voice in her mind.

Yes, Windrider she replied, stroking his eye-ridges. Minerva said I should come tonight.

Very well, the dragon replied. Remember that if you are ever in need of help, you are to call me. I will be watching over you.

The woman set about taking her things off of Windrider. Bags of her personal belongings and the staff she always had with her. Her wand was somewhere in the bags, broken in two pieces, though she did not need it due to her wandless abilities.

She was the youngest daughter of a Venetian noble, and her name was Serenity Serenissima. She was coming to Hogwarts on this night, the night of her twentieth birthday at the request of Minerva McGonagall, who wished that she come and start an apprenticeship. At the age of twelve, she had left home and never looked back. Her family, though kind, did not fully understand how different she was from the average witch. Though she had gotten her wand at eleven, before she started at Circe's School for Witches, she had soon realized that it was pointless that she continue using it. And so she had run away.

The next three years were spent in a small wizarding village in the Alps, which was where she met Windrider. The young dragon was staying in the mountains just outside the the village learning from an elderly dragon whom Serenity had befriended when she first arrived. The dragon, named Stonetongue introduced the two youngsters and when he died, he entrusted her to the care of Windrider and his family. They left the village and went to the valley he and his family occupied in Romania, which was where she first saw Harry Potter, though she was unaware of who he was.

He had just graduated Hogwarts, and was visiting Charlie Weasley at the preserve. Serenity was riding Windride's sister Snowfall to a secluded place where they could practice Serenity's magic when they passed over the two men, who were treating a dragon's injured wing. The younger, black-haired one looked up, and it seemed his green eyes pierced to her soul. Their eyes remained locked until Snowfall took her beyond his strong gaze.

For many nights thereafter, Serenity dreamed of those green eyes. She had flown over the preserve many times in the following days, yet never saw the green eyed man again. In her efforts to purge her mind of him, Serenity threw herself into learning all that Windrider's family could teach her. Dragons being magical creatures, and this family being both old and very wise, she learned much.

She also began to go into the nearest city, where she sent articles on transfiguration to several major journals of the subject. The articles were brilliant, even if they were by a novice. And that was how Minerva McGonagall found her, and as she was getting on in years, offered her an apprenticeship with the intent that she would take over when Minerva retired. Serenity accepted the offer.

Which was how she ended up here, on this night in the middle of December. The main doors opened, and light streamed out.

"You coming in?"; yelled the figure holding it open. Serenity gathered the few bundles she had as well as her staff and with a final, mental I'll talk to you later to Windrider, she ran into Hogwarts. As the heavy door closed behind her, Windrider took off, his wing beats silenced by the wind. She stood inside for a few moments simply enjoying the warmth, before shaking the snow off her cloak.

"You must be Minerva's new apprentice. I'm Harry Potter" the young man who had been at the door said. "She said you'd be coming tonight." He reached down to take her bags. "She also asked me to show you to her rooms, as she's at the Yule Ball right now."

" Yes, I'm her new apprentice. My name is Serenity Serenissima. Thank you," Serenity replied, pushing her hood back and loosening her long golden hair. It's very kind of you. I've never been to Hogwarts."

The young man was in front of her, leading the way. "Interesting, I thought that you came here. which was how Minerva knew you."

She laughed, "No. She found me through some articles I published in Transfiguration Today."

"Where were you living?"

"Romania."

The young man stopped and seemed about to say something before he stopped, shook his head as if to clear a thought from it, and they continued on to her rooms in silence.

The young man opened the door to a plain set of rooms furnished in heavy oak furniture and plain hangings. "You can do whatever you want to make this more like your rooms in Romania." She nodded and pulled off her cloak. In hanging it up on the hook by the door, she came face to face with the young man for the first time. She'd noticed his black hair, but alone it had meant nothing. Many young men had black hair. But he had piercing green eyes. Those eyes. She stopped, as if frozen.

He spoke, "I knew that dragon looked familiar. I saw it three years ago when I was with Charlie. I'd never seen a dragon that color before, and never since."

She chewed her lower lip, suddenly shy in the face of her dreams. "Actually, that was Windrider. You saw his twin sister, Snowfall."

"I guess it's an easy mistake to make. Especially in the snow." She nodded. "I guess I'd better let you settle in." He turned to leave, "Or..."

She looked up, "Or what?"

He shifted from one foot to the other, nervously. "Well, You could always come to the Ball with me. Meet your fellow faculty members."

She looked him in the eye, "I'd like that."

He waved his wand and his robes were replaced with more formal ones of a muted emerald. She clapped her hands and her riding gear was replaced by shimmering midnight blue dress robes. Harry extended his hand, and she accepted it and together they went down to the Ball.

Really, I have no clue why I wrote this. There's a longer version that I may post of The Pit, for amusement's sake, but I'm not sure. If I don't post it now, I'm not going to. I sort of dislike it, but...

I have no clue.

This time in a week, I'll be at school.
