One Short Rant Regarding Athletics
Nov. 16th, 2004 03:47 amNo matter how much I enjoy the Abbey, there is one thing that never fails to annoy me.
That damnable athletic requirement.
See, every year all students are required to meet an athletic requirement. This means team/competitive sports. I've managed to somehat get around the requirement, as I hate sports, yet am willing to do something else. Play, Art Club, Yearbook or Community Service.
And this time, I encountered resistance. The head of the Department was not exactly enthused about the fact that I dislike sports (never really has been for that matter). His exact quote was "We failed you." Since I have not earned a single Varsity letter in my four years here, then something is wrong. And then he decided to cite several cases of people who, when forced into a sport, did rather well.
I said I had done riding this fall. He went "Well, that's not exactly a sport..." My reply? "Yes it is." Just because we don't compete you shouldn't say that riding isn't a sport. I'd like to see him get up and ride. Then he said something about how riding shouldn't count as a sport, or something like that. I was not amused. So what if I go to college without a Varsity letter? My world will not end. I highly doubt it will have an impact on the rest of my life.
