Angela Carter was an amazing writer. I first found her in an anthology edited by Jack Zipes, the name of which I can't remember right now. The following story was the one published, and I fell in love with it.
So many little girls have fallen love with the Disney version (which, I should note, really does nothing for me). But that lacks something, and for all it's animated prettyness, it's really not, IMO, a really faithful re-telling. Then again, I have thing against Disney versions of "classic" fairy tales.
But Carter, oh god. This isn't some fluffy little fairy tale, it's something else. She's created something so dark, rich, and powerful. From the opening line "My father lost me to the Beast at cards" right on through the end (which I promise is not exactly what you're expecting) it's something amazing. Beauty and the Beast has never been my favorite fairy tale, but she makes me adore it here.
Now, click the cut and read! I order you to! :D
( The Tiger's Bride )
Thank you to Google's cache feature, which let me pull this up. The story can be found in several anthologies, including her own The Bloody Chamber with other fairy tale re-tellings and Burning Our Boats which contains all her stort stories.
