I love a good war movie
Jun. 26th, 2005 08:57 pmBlack Hawk Down is on right now, and I'm remembering why I love it so much.
It's very well-cast (Renton and Spud!), well-directed, andjust overall a damned good movie.
In watching it, I've never felt that Ridley Scott was attempting to portray anything other than what happened. Not that war is bad, that all soldiers are heroes, nothing that would be an external agenda. It's also a movie where I really feel for the characters-not sort of empathize or anything, but really feel for them and what they're going through. I'mnotreally sure what about it makes me feel this way, it just does.
War isn't some glorious thing, and there are some stellar movies about it. Some of my favorites include Apocalypse Now (redux version), The Deer Hunter, Hotel Rwanda, and The Killing Fields. I'd stick the Michael Caine/Brendon Frasier version of The Quiet American on as well, but I sort of don't classify it as a "war movie" per-say, even though it's about war.
Apocalypse Now is such a great movie on so many counts. I'm not going into it. The Deer Hunter is a well-done movie about a group of friends in Vietnam, I found it to be a bit melancholy, but Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken are wonderful. Hotel Rwanda is somewhat sad, if nothing else, but worth seeing. the Killing Fields, though... It's just... something else. Set in Cambodia when the Khmer Rouge took over, it's a true story. Not war exactly-but moving and powerful nonetheless. The Quiet American is something that you'll have to imagine that I'm beating you about the head with it in my desire tomake you see it. You just must.
Also of note is Saving Private Ryan, which sort of speaks for itself.
War in and of itself, it sort of stupid, and thinking about what I like, I notice that my ones of choice are more melancholy, gritty, thoughtful, and seem, to some extent, to be about the futility and stupidity of it.
