Aahh, Spring Break. No more exams at the Abbey.
*sniff* I feel lost...
Needless to say, meant I was renting movies today, which means reviews. I can't (and won't) promise total objectiveness. But that'll be blamed on the time.
First off, we've got Love me If You Dare-a French romantic drama. Somehow, it managed to be cute, sweet, sad, funny, upsetting, and weird all at the same time. Hell, it's not all that realistic (but what of the genre is?)], but I didn't think it took away any of the pleasure. The basic premise involves a game of 'Dare' that two people have taken from their childhood into adulthood. There was definitly something surreal at points, but I can honestly say it was very good. Brief puttering through the IMDB boards (usually amusing) leaves me wondering about people. This movie really isn't for everyone-it's a bit dark, and sometimes cruel, version of love. But nonetheless, I'd recommend not getting it expecting "The Feel-Good Movie of the Year." But it's worth seeing-simply because it's a very good flick. and it's nice to see a romantic movie in which things aren't predictable, where you're unsure of what each will dare the otehr to do next and how it will result, both for them and others.
Secondly, there was I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, another drama (though in no way romantic). I'm not going to say I rented it for Clive Owen (who doesn't shave for about 3/4 of the film and who I'm still deciding if with a beard he looks like Russell Crowe. At any rate, I think I prefer him clean shaven. Or pretty close to it.) and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (who, despite being in it for a relatively short period of time is nonetheless wonderfuland very sexy. Like the other Mike Hodges' stuff I've seen (Croupier and Get Carter), this had a decent number of twists and turns, making you unsure of what would come next. I don't think it was quite as good as the others, but it was by no means bad. Basic premise is Clive Owen's character finding out what happened that caused his brother (Rhys Myers) to die. A bit unsettling at times, and I wasn't as found of Owen
here as I was in Croupier (and I think that may have been a bit aesthetic, I prefer the slicked back hair, cigarette, and fedora at the typewriter thing over the lumberjack look)-but that in no way detract from the fact that it's well-done.
*bah* I need sleep. I'm going weird.
