Aahh, a productive weekend. I got virtually no schoolwork finished, but it was still good.

Becuase we went into New York City on Saturday to see the Gates and the the Rubin.

I've got lots of photos of the Gates, which I'll post when I scan them in, commentary will be included.

The Rubin is well worth a trip, it was a fascinating. There was the permanent collection, as well as two shows. The first was the Demonic image in Himalayan Art. Some of the thangkas and such were genuinely frightening, but all the things were just so beautiful. Possibly my favorite was Mahakala, or the Great Black One. He was in several works, all of which were beautiful. One of them was a statue, maybe a foot or two tall, which depicted him on some animal. It was wood and paper mache and just plain gorgeous. I think it was 16/17th Century (18th at the latest), but still just as detailed and in the same condition as if it had been made yesterday. There was also some massive stuff, including a thangka that had to be about 18/20 ft high and a 10x10 applique of a guardian.

The other show was of Tibetan Art. Among the items was an amazing robe. You know on bird feathers, all the little strands that extend from the shaft? Well, the robe had that part of peacock feathers woven into it, resulting in the most beautiful metallic sheen. There were also the standard prayer wheels, skull cups, jewellery (coral and turquoise, gorgeous), and more thangkas. Overall, and impressive museum.

And on a seperate note, it was a good movie weekend as well. Garden State is a sweet movie, and Croupier is wonderful. Both come highly recommened, especially Croupier.
