swordmage: (Who you are)
Recently, I stumbled across the community [livejournal.com profile] abandonedplaces.

It's exceedingly addictive.

Very simple/straight-forward really. Photos of places that have been abandoned. But there's a whole slew of them from across the country, as well as internationally. My favorites are in Russia/the former USSR. Massive buildings half-built and abandoned. Hospitals, farms, and young pioneer camps (which are kind of cool).

It's both kind of sad (some of the houses and such, or anything where there are shots of personal belongings) and quite interesting (in general).

This is one of my favorite sets. It's from an old TB hospital. What makes it so interesting are the large tile figures on one of the porches.

Artist to recreate Afghan Buddhas

Afghanistan's famous Bamiyan Buddhas are due to be recreated by multicoloured laser images projected onto the cliffs where they once stood.

This is neat. While I know that nothing lasts forever, seeing something that was 1600 years old destroyed, intentionaly, makes me sad. So do things like the looting of the Afghani museum. (Egyptian antiquities are another story for another time.) This artist's idea to have them stand there for four hours on Sunday nights in interesting and, well, thoughful.

Hope it all goes through.
